Talent suggestions for Season 36?

It’s that time again…we’re starting to generate our upcoming season’s talent wishlist. Who would you like to see on ACL this year? Our rough guidelines: needs to be an artist/band who is touring nationally or has a VERY strong regional following; has music distributed nationally (other than just digitally - i.e. we can go to a music store and purchase a CD); and should be someone who has a new record coming out and/or is touring in 2010. There should be some amount of buzz and media coverage around the band if they are up-and-coming; of course we are always looking for established legacy artists as well. Also, we try not to repeat acts we’ve already had on the show for 3-4 years.

ACL Associate Producer Leslie Nichols has been taking suggestions from her Twitter followers; here’s a list of what they’ve come up with so far. Chime in with your own suggestions! And, if you aren’t already, be sure to follow Leslie on Twitter at @TheOtherLeslie - she live tweets taping days and always has the best inside scoop on ACL.

*Please don’t go with these flash-in-the-pan indie bands like, Vampire Weekend, ugh please! They are only on their 2nd album! I mean, I am not suggesting Cheap Trick…but they do deserve a spot before VWeekend…so tired of Vampires.

Please show these veterans the respect they deserve. Trust me. It’ll be a show the ACL Studios will NEVER forget! Thanks a lot!

  101. Steve Sharpton says:

Some good choices on this list, so here are some of mine.

The Apples in Stereo - they have a new album in the works to come out this year, and they have been around for 15 years…definitely a good indie band

    Vampire Weekend

Tegan and Sara - got a tour coming up this year, so they could be an early season episode

Beach House - well received by critics, definitely a second act for any episode

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - new album in March, tour to follow, and a very strong indie following–could fill an episode if they wanted

Sufjan Stevens - give the guy an hour this time!!

    Sonic Youth - Why not?

Sigur Ros!! - they are way off the mainstream, but they always bring their A-Game (give them an hour and be blown away)

Barry Adamson — had an album come out last year, and his jazzy-electro style is certainly different

Grizzly Gear - can’t imagine any other band that is rising faster right now

Black Lips - always entertaining, and they will keep their act clean for the TV

The Daysleepers - Granted, they are small still, but they have a good sound that might coincide with the next band on the list…..

The Verve - whether they continue their comeback is still kind of a mystery, but it could be worth some feelers.

The National - Been around for a long time, so they may have enough fans to warrant a second act

Mono - their recent album is amazing and vibrant, and instrumental rock needs someone else to represent on ACL other than Explosions in the Sky

Golden Boots - A simple shout-out for a local Tucson, AZ group….think the weird little brother of My Morning Jacket

  102. Steve Sharpton says:

Almost forgot…..Camera Obscura. My Maudling Career was one of the best albums of 2009.

  103. Larry C! says:

    Bon iver
    The Rosebuds
    The National
    Yo La Tengo

  104. James Sykes says:

Talent suggestion for season 36 of ACL: Willy Porter. This man’s song writing, singing, and guitar work can be matched against anyone you care to name. Willy Porter has slowly been gaining attention and fame and if there is a musical god, his music will reach a much larger audience. Please give this musician a listen.

  160. MHoelscher says:

I would like to put in another vote for Sigur Ros. This is an unbelievable band live. Their music defies classification and their range and talent seems limitless. From the simplest, most beautiful folk songs to epics rivaling the best of Pink Floyd. They are a spiritual experience for me. Check out the finale their Heima concert in Reykjavik:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KH0EQm6Jmi4

  161. Michael a says:

ACL needs one jazz show every year. Maybe ‘young’ bands like: The Bad Plus, Vijay Iyer Trio, Martin Medeski & Wood. Obviously there are hosts of living legends still around who could play: Sonny Rollins, Ornette Coleman (native Texan), ect…

Guy Forsyth has paid his dues around Austin and deserves a 1/2 hour slot!!

And of course the big one: Bob Dylan has never appeared on ACL!!

  162. pumpkin says:

    Railroad Earth

  163. Jon says:

For everyone voting for Sigur Ros, you all should really check out the Danish band, Efterklang. I have already added them to the list, but I am surprised more they aren’t getting more praise from the ACL viewing community. The are perfect for the show, with an unbelievable, even spiritual live presence, they will be in town for SXSW, and they have a new album to be released on Feb. 22. They are also coming into the year with tons of critical acclaim from their past 2 releases. Sigur Ros is more or less unattainable as they hardly ever tour anymore, but Efterklang is just as good or better. See them live once and you’ll be hooked.

  164. Tyler C says:

Who doesnt love Radiohead? The Roots put on a great show. I would LOVE to see what Daft Punk does on the ACL stage. However, Yeasayer is the standout to me, new album is the tits.

Or just Taylor Swift and Omar and the Howlers.

  169. James says:

  315. Mark Grosz says:

    Hi Leslie!

You’ve never done a show on Christian worship artists. A number of innovators who greatly influenced worship music are from Texas!

Paul Baloche - a long time worship music influencer, songwriter, encourager and teacher. He was the first I know of to put up videos to show people how to play his music (in any genre). He is also one of the few people I know of that can hold the attention of 100K people with just him, his guitar, and the presence of God that he carries. http://www.leadworship.com

David Crowder Band- very ACL eclectic mix of acoustic meets electronica meets deeply thoughful lyrical concepts… “beautiful collision” http://www.davidcrowderband.com

Chris Tomlin - positive influencer, especially for young adults and teens, songwriter, very effective worship leader, trendsetting music and lyrical content. Deeply cares about young people (picked them up at airport and then saw how they interacted with the youth and young adults).
    http://www.christomlin.com

Rita Springer - Rita is now living in NC but she is an amazing worship leader who hugely impacted me by her genuine, deep intimacy with God that is journaled and shared in her songwriting, teaching and worship leading.

    Cadillac Sky - http://www.CadillacSky.net
These guys have the ability to blow away even the most seasoned concert-goer with their live shows, and at the end of the night, leave their audience with the distinct feeling that they have just witnessed one step in the early stages of something huge. An incredible amount of energy, love, and determination is put into everything they do - from performances and recordings, to fan interaction - and it certainly shows. Their upcoming album, “Letters In the Deep” is sure to be an unprecedented treat for music lovers everywhere, regardless of genre preference. It will be their third full-length album, and was produced by none other than Dan Auerbach (The Black Keys/Blakroc).
Cadillac Sky is an exceptionally talented group that is not to be missed.
