Check out #2 on this end-of-decade list from Austin 360, the website affiliated with our local daily.
Of course, not everyone agress with Patrick Caldwell’s assertion that ACL’s musical expansion is a good thing, as some of our fans remind us. Most of you seem happy with it, and we certainly are. Sound off below and let us know what you think!

Austin 360's 10 Years of Austin Music Memories

ACL People:
Tonight my wife and I watched ACL again when Allen Toussiant was featured. We liked it again because the music was quieter and had a stronger blues and jazz genre versus the more recent artists who seem to make music with only guitars and loud singing. ACL used to be a place where one could hear music that was not on MTV or the commercial radio stations. Also, ACL used to have Texas swing/blues artists on such as Maria Ball.
I guess my wife and I are saying that we do not agree with the muscial expansion of ACL because it gets away from the basic music with pianos and horns and neat chord changes.
You pulled us back with Allen T., and I hope you pull us back with the basic music that does not have to be loud and guitar based. We always check to see what is on hoping for something we like.
Best regards, Jim G.
Change is good. Change is needed. Without change (ie growth), there’s stagnation, which does nobody any good. For your next hip-hop themed show, may I recommend that y’all check out “The Foreign Exchange”. They are a R&B/eletronica/hip hop duo consisting of American rapper/singer Phonte Coleman and Dutch producer Nicolay. They’re soulful and their music quality is second to none
Agreed! Change reflects the needs of a more balanced society. There are ‘neat’ chord changes in music from ALL over the world - and hip-hop is a reflection of a time that we aught to honor and celebrate as well! Foreign Exchange are great. Another group I’d suggest is “Blitz the Ambassador” - who fuses Ghanaian elements of high life music and is performed with a live band….
…A sign of the future of music that mixes and gracefully plays with sounds from all over the world (and I don’t just mean Paul Simon). Embrace change ACL!
